2016[Shiwaku Islands] Setouchi Triennale 2016

Autumn: Honjima, Kagawa, Japan/2016

We organized knitted fishing net workshops on the five Shiwaku Islands including Shamijima, Seijima, Yoshima, Iwakurojima and Hitsuishijima where the Great Seto Bridge crosses. The net was displayed on the shore hanging vertically towards the sky. Viewers looked at the landscape through the net as it changed continuously with the weather and the rise and fall of the tides. In this workshop, I attempted to connect people and their memories of the sea and the islands. Through the meshes of fishing nets, we could see the landscape in a new way.

In the autumn term, this project was continued on Honjima Island. We reaffirmed the ties between islands by connecting fishing nets knitted in Honjima, Ushijima, Hiroshima, Teshima, and Oteshima.

At the completion of the work, about 100 people from all of the ten islands who joined the workshops in the spring and autumn terms came by ship for a splendid celebration ceremony for the Sora-ami. That was the moment when the former Shiwaku Islands were reconnected through art.
