[Miyakejima Island] Miyakejima University Project

2012Ako Fishing Port, Tokyo/2012

The project held on the island led to the beginning of Sora-ami. In June 2011, I met a veteran fisherman on Miyakejima Island and was taught by him how to knit fishing nets. After that, the act of knitting fishing nets became a participatory art project and expanded to various places. The Miyakejima University Project became an opportunity to report back to the island and it was sort of a way to give back to the island. By performing the project on the pier in the fishing port, we created a space for fishermen, island residents and tourists to meet and interact with each other.

In a fishing village on Miyakejima Island surrounded by the sea, people had knitted fishing nets to earn money. But now, in the form of Sora-ami, net-making became a means "to connect communities" and began to connect people with each other and their memories of the sea.

In this way, the fishing net displayed in the sky which never caught fish gave us an opportunity to look at the world we see in our daily lives anew.
