Akasaki Wednesday Post Office

2013~2016Tsunagi Art Museum, Kumamoto, Japan/2013-16

A quite mysterious art project at the former Akasaki Elementary School, known as the “elementary school on the sea” in Tsunagi Town, Kumamoto Prefecture. In this project, you write and send a letter about what happened on Wednesday, and in return receive a letter with somebody else’s Wednesday story. These letters exchange stories of daily life at random and travel between people across the sea.

This project was based on an idea of mine and of movie director Shoji Toyama. Using a lighthouse on a post, which was the symbol of this project, as a motif, we made original goods such as envelopes and posters. We also held workshops to connect local residents with the project. About 9,300 letters were exchanged beyond the sea during the three-year-long project, which was favorably received.

When I visited the former Akasaki Elementary School for research, I faced a challenging restriction that while I could make use of this location I could not enter the building due to its poor earthquake resistance. However, this condition became a starting point for the project. The project is of an elementary school on the sea. The sea is expanding boundlessly. It means that this place could be the center of the world but we cannot enter the building. It is like an “empty center.” Thinking about the empty center, everyone can join, it connects this side and other side of the sea... while contemplating this I had an image of a message in a bottle passing by in front of me.

There are two reasons why the project should be done on Wednesday―first, Wednesday means “the day of water” in Japanese. Second, the school was located on the “water” and I thought we could feel the joy of daily life in the middle of the week, on Wednesday, when we easily forget about the importance of our daily lives. In a handwritten letter about the story of their Wednesday from an unknown person, there was a unique character and warmth that couldn’t be found in social media or email. The letter brought me a happy momentary encounter and helped me imagine that across the sea there is surely someone going about their daily life. It helped me notice that in normal daily life lies hope for the future.
